What makes it perfect?

In Men’s Fashion for many years there has been a huge debate on what makes it perfect? What does this really mean? What I am talking about here is entire look and fit of a suit, suit jacket, and dress shirts. How does it feel, look, and more importantly fit? So, what I am really talking about here is comparison between Ready to Wear (off the rack) vs Made to Measure vs Bespoke.

If you have been learning or know about menswear, you are most likely aware of these terms and can know the difference between them. If you don’t have a clue, don’t worry just continue reading …

Off the rack suit

This is a suit that most men buy. Off the rack suits can be less expensive, however, it can be expensive as well. It all depends on the brand and the quality of the materials used. Off the rack suits are produced in sizes that fit most men. Now, don’t get this confused while it will fit most men, at the same time it will not fit majority. Although off the rack suits come in many patterns and styles, when you buy off the rack suit you will almost always have to alter it, especially the sleeves and the length of the pants. Therefore, you will have to spend some additional money to alter and make it closer to a great or perfect fit. It is also advisable to have some good tailor that can make those alterations.

Made to Measure

Unlike getting a high priced designer suit, getting a custom suit, made to measure by a skilled craftsperson, is no longer just for the rich and famous. These suits are predesigned, however, they are altered to fit your measures. Made to measure suit is usually made by hand, but it can be made by a machine. Fabrics may also be of a less quality than in bespoke suits, but of a better quality than off the rack suits. You choose from the materials, construction, style, buttons, everything. Also these suits are fully canvassed and not glued like off the rack suits. The canvas, which is a blend of wool and animal hair is stitched in between the lining and suit fabric, providing support for the suit and making it drape better.

Bespoke

Bespoke experience will cost you money that you may or may not want to spend, but you will get a suit that is one of a kind with high quality materials that can last you a lifetime. These suits are designed and made by experienced cutters and tailors by hand. Usually, you will have to go through 2 to 4 fittings where your measurements will be taken and the suit will be altered until if fits you like a glove. Bespoke suits shapes around your body and tailor can alter the suit in a way that will hide any imperfections you may have. Bespoke suits have one more quality, If, for example you gain weight and jacket becomes too small, you can alter it, because in the production of bespoke suit there is added material hidden inside the jacket that can be unstitched and pulled out, stitched again so that it fits your new size. Instead of buying a new jacket, your bespoke one can be adjusted and in my opinion this worth every penny.

Such a nice read Erick, always good to see tailoring being pushed as a personal experience and not just off the rack.

    Dear Eric,
First of all I’ve been waiting for this post. I always look forward to each and every one of your posts and know I am going to be entranced by the captures ( and your complete handsomeness) but also learn so much about fashion, style and impeccable quality ! After reading about the 3 types of suits it is clear that the Bespoke way is the route to go. The craftsmanship alone is worth the investment and then you will save because you won’t have to go to a tailor and then another tailor when that one doesn’t work out !

Thanks for pointing out the difference! I’ve had a few off the rack suits I’ve gotten tailored and a few made-to-measure suits but never a bespoke. It would be nice to get one one day!

Nice post, Eric! I always love seeing men getting their tailored suit as the experience is so personal and fit is always better than the ones from the department stores. I’ll definitely tell the guys in my family to check them out.

Yet another well written and informative post, Eric. I often struggle with suits given my awkwardly large shoulders. I think made to measure would work best for me?? till next time 😉

I shamefully must admit I lived in the misconception that a made to measure suit was the same thing as a bespoke one until I read your post. Thanks for saving me from embarrassing moments to come and teaching me something new!
